Wayne W. Sharp, PhD, and his wife, Linda, have been a part of the McLean, Virginia community since 1968 and longstanding patients of VHC Health. They recently joined the VHC Health Foundation’s Galen Society, which celebrates lifetime donations exceeding $25,000.

Dr. Sharp, reflecting on the essential care he received, said, “I’m only here because of God, Linda and VHC Health. That’s why I’m personally so grateful.”

Over his career, Dr. Sharp has received numerous accolades as an international economist and diplomat. His achievements include two “President’s Meritorious Foreign Service Awards” and exemplary service in various U.S. Embassies. Mrs. Sharp has witnessed firsthand the impact of philanthropy on healthcare, particularly during her time as a dietitian at the University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Beyond their financial contributions to VHC Health, the Sharps are committed to spreading awareness about adoption—beginning with VHC Health employees.

The Sharps’ philanthropy: bridging generosity and personal mission

Dr. Sharp envisions a partnership between VHC Health and the Alexandria-based National Council for Adoption (NCFA), an organization pivotal in guiding potential adoptive parents through challenges—from bureaucratic navigation to understanding child adoption tax benefits.

And that partnership is already underway. Collaborating with VHC Health’s human resources, the Sharps have introduced educational materials from the NCFA for employees. This initiative aims to provide those interested in adoption with essential resources. As an adoptee himself, Dr. Sharp’s association with NCFA, where he served as board chair and now functions as the emeritus director and ambassador for adoption, deepens his commitment to this cause.

“Blending my NCFA experience with VHC Health’s outreach amplifies my gratitude,” said Dr. Sharp. “I stand uniquely poised to advocate for this mission.”

The true spirit of philanthropy

The Sharps’ philanthropy is built on gratitude, commitment, and the transformative power of their generosity. “What we wanted to do was make a lasting difference, by providing long-term support and programs for both VHC Health employees and patients, and the loving option of adoption through NCFA,” said Dr. Sharp.

“Philanthropy can make a difference for everyone in the community–it expands the resources a health system can provide to build a healthier community.”
