John D. Nguyen’s family story is one of resilience and the spirit of giving back to the community. Nguyen Van Thoi, John’s father, fought alongside American forces during the Vietnam War, which led to his imprisonment after the conflict. In 1978, he escaped by boat with his family to come to America as refugees, and later founded Nam Viet, a Vietnamese restaurant that has thrived in Arlington for more than 39 years. John, now a managing partner at Clarendon Wealth Management and a VHC Health board member, has built on his family’s legacy of determination and community involvement.
To John’s family, VHC Health is more than just a health system. Both of John’s siblings were born here, and the hospital provided care through various life challenges—from emergency visits to mending broken bones as their family grew. When John’s father was diagnosed with lung cancer, VHC Health was a beacon of hope. His physicians, including Dr. John Feigert, oncologist, and Dr. David Duhamel, pulmonologist, provided care that transcended their professional duties. They not only offered medical treatment, but also 18 months filled with dignity, hope and quality of life, which left a lasting impression on the family.
Dr. Suzanne Prather’s excellent care guided John’s wife, KC, through the birth of their three children. When John’s mom, Anh, went through trying times, Dr. Prather was there as well.
Giving back to VHC Health
“VHC Health isn’t just a community pillar; it’s a cornerstone of my family’s journey,” said John. He and his wife, KC, recently made a significant donation to VHC Health and dedicated a patient room. “We are deeply grateful to the hospital. This is our way of ensuring others can find comfort in the same space that provided care to our family.”
“While I suspect that my father may be proud that his namesake is etched on a room at the hospital, I know he would be most proud that we were able to pay it forward so those in need will have access to the highest level of medical care that my family has experienced,” said John. “We also want to ensure paying it forward to our diverse communities so that each person can receive care, no matter their financial circumstances.”
The Nguyen family has consistently supported VHC Health in many ways, not just financially but also in kindness. For the last ten years, they have provided more than 5,000 meals from Nam Viet to the VHC Health staff each Christmas Eve.
John acknowledges the spirit of benevolence prevalent in Arlington, giving a nod to families like the Millars, Hitts, Nassettas and others who have led and inspired an entire community to pay it forward.
With three successive generations intertwined with VHC Health, the Nguyens stand as another example of a family exemplifying the values of community and gratitude.
