Currently, Virginia is facing a substantial 29% shortage of inpatient psychiatric beds. The demand for facilities providing comprehensive care for adolescents, adults, and those in need of specialized care is steadily on the rise at VHC Health, including:
- 43% increase in demand for mental health and substance services in Arlington County
- 11,000 psychiatric emergencies were treated in VHC Health’s Emergency Department
- 4,00 individuals with with psychiatric emergencies had to be turned away due to shortage of resources and available beds

Meeting the surge in mental health needs
In a joint effort with Arlington County, VHC Health is expanding much-needed mental health and rehabilitation services. VHC Health will transform 5.8 acres at 601 S. Carlin Springs Rd. into an advanced behavioral health wellness facility with a 24-bed adolescent unit, a 24-bed adult unit, and a 24-bed recovery and wellness unit. Inpatient rehabilitation services at the Carlin Springs facility will feature 40 beds dedicated to treating individuals with brain and spinal cord injuries, stroke, and other neurological conditions.
